Lu Kemp - Director
Lu is Associate Artist with the award-winning company Inspector Sands for whom she recently directed Mass Observation at the Almeida Summer Festival. She's also recently directed ARABIAN NIGHTS at the Tricycle Theatre which played over Xmas and will shortly begin rehearsals for THE DAY I SWAPPED MY DAD FOR A GOLDFISH for the National Theatre of Scotland. She previously directed Inspector Sands' If That's All There Is, winner of the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe Prize 2009. Lu created One Thousand Paper Cranes, which was part of the Made In Scotland Showcase 2011 and will be appearing at the New York Victory in 2013. Other recent work includes: Jan Sobrie's Titus, Edinburgh International Children's Festival 2012, John Donnelly's Encourage the Others for the Almeida and Carl Grose's The Thirteen Midnight Challenges of Angelus Diablo for the RSC at Latitude. Lu will be directing Arabian Nights for the Tricycle Theatre later this year.
As a dramaturg Lu regularly works with physical theatre and dance companies. She will be collaborating on Imogen Knight's new dance piece, winner of the CFE Award (Sadlers Wells and Company of Angels), in January 2013.
Lu is a visiting lecturer at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and has taught playwriting and dramaturgy for the Arvon Foundation, the BBC, The Playwright's Studio Scotland and the Almeida, London.
Awards: Best Scottish Contribution to Drama on the Fringe, Edinburgh Guide (for One Thousand Paper Cranes); The Edinburgh International Festival Fringe Prize '09 (for If That's All There Is with Inspector Sands); Oxford Samuel Beckett Award 2005 (for Almost Blue, a dance-theatre piece with choreographer Dominic Leclerc); The Cameron Mackintosh Prize for Musical Theatre and Judges Award for Ingenuity (The Hunting of the Snark at the National Student Drama Festival 2000). Her collaboration with Arte Radio France, Deja-vu was a finalist for the Radio Fiction Prix Europa 2009.
Lu trained on the LEM at Lecoq, Paris, and with Anne Bogart's SITI Company, New York.
